Key Scene Analysis

Below is a scene from the famous sitcom "Red Dwarf". I have chosen this scene (Worse than playing away at Leeds) because it has a variety of shots and also the script is very well written within the shots.

This is a scene from Series 7 of Red Dwarf where the characters embark on an adventure with a Queen. At the start of the scene we automatically see an establishing shot of the run down castle walls and the set up stalls that shows us that this is set in the late tudor times, after 4 seconds we see someone blowing into a horn attached to a flag which is showing us that something very grand and importand is going on, this is also the first cutaway shot.

At 0:8 seconds we are introduced to the second cutaway shot showing the King and Queen on there "Thrones",it then cuts away to the Knight and Rimmer telling the royals that they will be fighting each other, this tells the audience whats happening in the scene. After the audience have established this the shot cuts away back to the King and Queen. This scene is supposed to make the viewers laugh at certain parts of the scene by adding on " Canned Laughter" this is where sounds of laughter has been added on after the scene has been shot. There are different lengths of timed laughter to give away to the audience of how funny that scene should be portrayed.

At 1:26 we see the Knight turn around to reply to the king and during this there is a slight zoom in on his face, this is a poor edit as the viewers would notice it really easily. The poor edit had the editor try and cover it up so its less noticible for the viewers by again using the canned laughter, This makes the scene alot more enjoyable. The scene ends with the line that wins the audience over "This is worse than playing at Leeds" this is covered by canned laughter and as everyone departs from the ground and moves away we are then brought back to the person blowing back into his horn to the first cutaway shot.

Overall the directors intention for this scene was to make the audience laugh and go away happy after watching it . Even though there were some obvious edits, they were able to come above it and prove that this was a good scene to watch. The Red Dwarf series are usually funny and by creating an image for the audience to play with makes this episode very creative and unique.
